Amelia Hawkins

Visiting Assistant Professor
Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR)

In Residence: September 25, 2023 - December 13, 2023

Amelia Hawkins is an Assistant Professor in the Economics Department at Brandeis University. Her research interests are in the areas of Public Finance and Labor Economics. Her research explores how social insurance and public assistance programs affect individual and firm decision making, with a particular focus on their implications for the labor market. She is also interested in better understanding how unexpected deterioration in health or low initial health endowments affect individual and household well-being, what private and public resources people draw upon in those events, and how much they value these transfers, designed to palliate the risks of unexpected income loss. She earned her PhD in Economics from the University of Michigan and then was a postdoc at the NBER. Before graduate school, she worked for the Urban Institute’s Center on Labor, Human Services and Population. I earned a BA in Economics from Williams College.

Focal Areas: Taxes and Public Spending, Inequality, Health
